Reflection
I have participated in many interviews prior to my practicum experience, however, my courses really helped me find what to look for in a candidate. The first assignment was to visit with a principal about what they look for in a candidate. While I have interviewed with this principal many times, it was interesting to hear her perspective. What stuck out to me from that interview and class is that some districts have very formal interview procedures and some are more informal. This specific principal likes interviews to be more informal to allow the candidate to feel at east but she did wish there were more district procedures in place. Additionally, it is important to know how a person will fit into a position and also the culture of the school. If a school is really needing to improve climate and culture, the person hired needs to be able to fit in with the strategic plan of the district. As the principal stated, anyone can teach content, it's the other personality traits that are more difficult to assess in an interview. Another aspect of class was inherent implicit bias and equity that I need to be aware of when participating in interviews. Prior to my practicum experience and current position, I did run the districts time off system and input absences into our HR system. Although I felt like I learned a lot during my practicum and courses, this is still an area of growth for me.
